Open an Australian Bank Account by JJ Smith 23 September 2026 written by JJ Smith 23 September 2026 6.8K Open an Australian Bank Account Before Moving to Australia.Opening an Australian bank account is one of those jobs that’s much easier to organise before you move to Australia — if your chosen bank allows you to do so.When you first arrive, you’ll already have plenty to sort out: your Tax File Number, somewhere permanent to live, an Australian mobile number, Medicare, work, schools, transport… the list goes on!Having your Australian banking underway means there’s one less thing to think about. Once you arrive, you can complete any required identification, activate your account and get your Australian debit card.Tip: Ask your bank to print a statement showing your new Australian address. This can be an incredibly handy proof of address when you’re setting yourself up in Australia and need documents to help establish your identity. You’ll also have an Australian bank account ready to receive your wages and transfer money from New Zealand when you’re ready. My advice is simple: don’t wait until you’ve moved to Australia to start thinking about banking. Research your options before you leave New Zealand and, if your chosen bank allows you to open or start setting up your account before you arrive, get it underway.Editors Note: My husband and I are both with Commonwealth Bank and we love them! Coming from New Zealand, we expect a high level of customer service, and CommBank has exceeded both of our expectations!I waited until I arrived in Australia to open my account, while my husband opened his online before we left. Bummer for me!When I went into the branch with my husband, I couldn’t open an account because I didn’t have the paperwork they needed. I ended up leaving the bank and opening my account online, just like my husband had done before we moved. Meanwhile, he walked out of the branch with his debit card and could start using his Australian bank account straight away.If you wait until you’re in Australia and go directly into a branch to open an account, you may need proof of your Australian address, such as a rental agreement, before you can fully access your account. If you set up your Australian bank account before you leave New Zealand, the process can be much easier — my husband only needed his passport to complete his identification once we arrived.Learn from our mistakes and get your Australian bank account set up before you leave! On this page, you will find the following helpful information:Why Open an Australian Bank Account Before You Move? Can I Open an Australian Bank Account from New Zealand? When Should I Open My Australian Bank Account? How Do I Open an Australian Bank Account Before I Move? What Do I Need to Take to the Bank? What Happens to My Debit Card?Which Australian Bank Do I Recommend?Compare Australian Banks Before You MoveDo I Need an Australian Address to Open a Bank Account? What Documents Will I Need?Australian Bank Accounts for New Zealand CitizensOpening a Joint Bank Account in AustraliaGetting Paid in AustraliaTransferring Your Money from New Zealand to AustraliaDon’t Close Your New Zealand Bank Account YetWhat to Do With Your Bank Account After You Arrive in AustraliaMy TipFrequently Asked Questions. Why Open an Australian Bank Account Before You Move?Your Australian bank account is going to become one of the foundations of your new life in Australia.Very quickly, you’ll need it for things like:receiving your Australian wagespaying rent and household billssetting up direct debitseveryday spendingtransferring money from New Zealandreceiving refunds and other Australian paymentssetting up services and accounts in AustraliaThe first few weeks after an international move can be busy enough without adding jobs you could have started before leaving NZ.Depending on which bank you choose, you may still need to complete identification or activation requirements once you’re physically in Australia. But having the initial application completed can make the process considerably easier. Can I Open an Australian Bank Account from New Zealand?Yes — and it’s easy to get the process underway before you leave New Zealand. You can set up an Australian bank account through CommBank using this link.CommBank has been helping make the move easier for New Zealanders for more than 20 years — certainly for as long as I’ve been helping Kiwis move across the Tasman! You can apply shortly before you move, so you can have your Australian banking underway before you even get on the plane.Open an Australian Bank Account with CommBank.Other Australian banks also offer options for new arrivals, which I’ve compared below, so you can choose the bank that works best for you. When Should I Open My Australian Bank Account?Start researching your banking options a few weeks before you move, but don’t be surprised if you can’t actually submit your application that early. Some banks have quite specific pre-arrival windows. For example, CommBank currently allows eligible customers moving to Australia to open an account up to 14 days before arriving. If you’re following my Countdown to Australia, this is exactly the kind of task I recommend getting sorted before departure rather than adding it to your arrival list. How Do I Open an Australian Bank Account Before I Move?Opening an Australian bank account before you move is easy. If you choose CommBank, you can apply online in less than four minutes and have your account set up before you leave New Zealand. Here’s how:Apply online for your Australian bank account before you move. You can use your NZ address if you haven’t organised where you will stay when you arrive.CommBank will send you a Welcome Letter with details about your new account and what you need to do when you arrive.Once you’re in Australia, visit the CommBank branch specified in your Welcome Letter to confirm your identity.CommBank will activate your account so you can access your money and all its digital banking features.Collect your debit card from the branch if eligible, or have it sent to your Australian address.Don’t forget to ask for a printout of your statement to use for ID.Apply online for an Australian bank account. What Do I Need to Take to the Bank? When you visit CommBank to confirm your identity, take:Your current passport — the original document is required.Your Tax Identification Number (TIN) for each country where you’re a foreign tax resident. For New Zealand, have your IRD number available and take an IRD document showing it.Your visa documentation, if applicable. For most New Zealand citizens moving to Australia on a New Zealand passport, your passport will be the key document. What Happens to My Debit Card?If you open your account within seven days of arriving in Australia, your debit card won’t be available to collect from the branch.Instead, once CommBank has confirmed your identity, you’ll need to provide the Australian address where you’d like your debit card sent.Once your identity has been confirmed and your account activated, you’ll be able to access your money and use CommBank’s digital banking services, including NetBank and the CommBank app.My tip: Get this job done before you leave NZ. You’ll already have plenty to organise when you arrive, and having your Australian bank account underway is one less thing to worry about. Which Australian Bank Do I Recommend? There are plenty of Australian banks to choose from, and I’ve included the major options below so you can make your own comparison. However, if you’re asking which bank I recommend to New Zealanders moving to Australia, it’s CommBank.CommBank is a Moving to Australia referral partner, so if you open an account through my links, I may receive a referral payment. But they’re also a bank I’m very comfortable recommending based on my own experience.Editor’s Note: My Experience with CommBank – I personally bank with CommBank in Australia and have had a great experience with them.Their customer service is fantastic and banking with them is easy. Their app is excellent, managing your money is straightforward, and they have a large branch and ATM network throughout Australia. When you’re moving countries, there are already so many things to organise. Banking is one of those things you just want to work — but you also want to know you can speak to someone when you need to. CommBank’s systems don’t just work well; their team is there to help when you need them. That’s why I’m happy to recommend CommBank to Moving to Australia visitors — not simply because they’re a referral partner, but because they’re a bank I actually use and have had such a positive experience with myself.Disclosure: CommBank is a Moving to Australia referral partner. I may receive a referral payment if you open an account through links on this website. This doesn’t cost you anything extra, and I only promote companies and services that I personally use or have extensively researched. Compare Australian Banks Before You MoveAustralia’s four major banks are Commonwealth Bank (CommBank), ANZ, Westpac and NAB.There are also smaller and online banks, but if your priority is getting your banking organised around your move from New Zealand, I’d pay particular attention to how and when each bank lets a new arrival open an account. Please note, Australian and New Zealand banks are separate, even when they share the same name.Commonwealth Bank (CommBank) – My RecommendationCommBank currently allows eligible people moving to Australia to apply for an Everyday Smart Access account up to 14 days before arriving in Australia.Importantly, you don’t need an Australian address to set up the account.Once you arrive, you’ll need to complete CommBank’s identification and tax residency requirements before you can use your new account.ANZANZ has a specific Trans-Tasman account-opening process for people moving from New Zealand to Australia. You can start the process from New Zealand and verify your identity at an ANZ New Zealand branch before completing the Australian account-opening process with ANZ Australia. This makes ANZ well worth considering if getting as much of your banking organised as possible while you’re still in New Zealand is important to you.WestpacWestpac allows eligible customers arriving in Australia within the next 14 days to start setting up a Westpac Choice account and Online Banking before arrival.Unlike CommBank, Westpac currently asks you to provide an Australian address, even if it’s temporary.New Zealand customers may also be eligible to verify their identity online using Westpac’s Smart Verify process.NABNAB is another of Australia’s Big Four banks. Its current new-to-Australia account-opening requirements include an Australian address and Australian mobile number, so it isn’t as useful if your main objective is getting your account organised while you’re still living in New Zealand. Please note, bank requirements change, so always check the bank’s current eligibility and identification requirements before applying. Do I Need an Australian Address to Open a Bank Account? Not necessarily. This is another reason it’s worth comparing banks before you move.CommBank currently states that you don’t need an Australian address to set up its migrant Everyday Smart Access account.Westpac’s new-arrival application, on the other hand, asks for an Australian address, although it can be temporary accommodation.NAB currently requires an Australian address and mobile number. If you haven’t secured permanent accommodation yet, check whether your chosen bank accepts your New Zealand address or temporary Australian accommodation. What Documents Will I Need? The exact requirements vary between banks, but I’d have the following information and documents available:your current New Zealand passportyour planned Australian arrival dateyour Australian address, if you have oneyour Australian visa details, where applicableyour New Zealand Tax Identification Number (TIN/IRD number), if requestedyour email address and mobile numberadditional identification if required by your bankYou may also need to complete further identity verification online or in an Australian branch before you can fully use the account. Australian Bank Accounts for New Zealand CitizensNew Zealand citizens have a slightly different moving experience from many other migrants. If you’re an eligible New Zealand citizen travelling on a valid New Zealand passport, you generally don’t need to apply for a visa before travelling to Australia. A Special Category Visa (subclass 444) can be granted when you enter Australia, provided you meet the requirements. This can make some Australian forms confusing when they ask for your visa details. If you’re asked for visa information while setting up your Australian banking and you’re unsure what to enter, check the bank’s specific instructions for New Zealand citizens rather than guessing. Opening a Joint Bank Account in AustraliaIf you’re moving with your partner, you might eventually want a combination of individual accounts and a joint account for household expenses. However, don’t assume you’ll automatically be able to add your partner to an account you’ve opened before moving.Banks have their own joint-account and identification requirements, and both account holders generally need to have their identities verified.Depending on your bank, it may be easier to get your everyday accounts underway first and organise your joint banking once you’re both in Australia. Getting Paid in AustraliaOne of the main reasons I recommend getting your Australian bank account sorted early is work.Your Australian employer will generally need your:account nameBSBaccount numberYour BSB is the six-digit number that identifies your Australian bank/branch for payments. You’ll also need to deal separately with your Tax File Number (TFN).Your TFN isn’t your bank account number and you don’t need to wait for your first payday to start thinking about it. Applying for a TFN is another important job to complete once ASAP after arriving in Australia.Read: Apply for an Australian Tax File Number. Transferring Your Money from New Zealand to AustraliaOpening an Australian bank account and deciding how to transfer your New Zealand dollars into it are two separate decisions. You don’t have to use your Australian bank — or your New Zealand bank — to transfer your money internationally. Before transferring a significant amount, compare:the NZD/AUD exchange rate you’re actually being offeredtransfer feesany receiving feeshow much AUD will ultimately arrive in your Australian accountThis becomes particularly important if you’re transferring a large amount of savings or proceeds from selling a property.Even a small difference in the exchange rate can make a significant difference to how many Australian dollars you receive.Read: Transferring Money from New Zealand to Australia. Don’t Close Your New Zealand Bank Account YetI definitely wouldn’t rush to close your New Zealand bank account before you move. There will often still be loose ends at home after you’ve left. You may have:final bills and direct debitsrefunds coming back to youNew Zealand income still being paidexpenses relating to a property you’ve keptsubscriptions you haven’t moved yetpayments you’ve simply forgotten aboutKeeping your New Zealand account open while you establish yourself in Australia gives you some breathing room. Before moving, check with your NZ bank about using and maintaining your account while living overseas, and make sure they have your correct contact and tax-residency information where required. What to Do With Your Bank Account After You Arrive in AustraliaOpening or starting your account before you leave doesn’t necessarily mean there’s nothing left to do.Once you arrive:Complete any outstanding identity verification.Provide or update your Australian residential address.Update your mobile number when you get an Australian one.Provide your tax residency information.Activate your debit card or digital card.Set up and check your banking app and online banking.Give your bank details to your employer.Set up PayID if you want to use it.Start moving bills and direct debits across.Compare your options before transferring larger amounts from New Zealand.Do these jobs early and your Australian account will quickly become your main everyday banking account. My TipDon’t leave opening your Australian bank account until you desperately need an account number for your first pay. You’re going to have a lot to do when you first arrive in Australia.Banking is one of the things you can research — and with some banks, start organising — before you leave New Zealand.Choose your bank before your move, find out exactly when you’re eligible to apply, and put a reminder in your calendar to open the account as soon as that window begins. You’ll thank yourself when you arrive! Frequently Asked QuestionsCan a New Zealander open a bank account in Australia?Yes. New Zealanders can open Australian bank accounts, subject to the eligibility and identification requirements of their chosen bank. Can I open an Australian bank account before I move?Yes, with some banks. CommBank currently allows eligible new arrivals to apply up to 14 days before arrival. Other banks have different requirements. How early can I open an Australian bank account before moving? It depends on the bank. Some banks currently use a 14-day pre-arrival window..I recommend choosing your bank several weeks before your move and then applying as soon as that bank allows you to.Do I need an Australian address? Not always. CommBank’s current migrant banking process doesn’t require an Australian address to set up the account. Other banks may require an Australian address, including temporary accommodation.Do I need a TFN to open an Australian bank account?Your Tax File Number and Australian bank account are separate.Banks are required to collect tax-residency information, and you should provide your Australian TFN once you have one. If you’re moving to Australia to work, applying for your TFN should be high on your arrival checklist. Can I transfer money into my Australian account before I arrive?Generally no, because of anti-laundering money laws. Most pre-arrival accounts have restrictions until your identity has been verified, so check exactly what your account allows before transferring money. Can I have an Australian and New Zealand bank account at the same time?Yes. You don’t need to close your New Zealand bank account simply because you’ve opened an Australian one.In fact, I recommend keeping your NZ account open initially while you finish transitioning your finances between the two countries.Should I use my New Zealand bank’s Australian equivalent? Not necessarily.Even when Australian and New Zealand banks have related brands or ownership, your New Zealand account doesn’t simply become an Australian account when you move.Compare the Australian accounts based on their own fees, features, account-opening requirements and what works best for you.Which Australian bank is best for New Zealanders moving to Australia? There isn’t one bank that will suit everyone.I personally use and recommend CommBank, which is also a Moving to Australia referral partner. It currently allows eligible customers to start opening an account up to 14 days before arriving and doesn’t require an Australian address to set up the account.Have a look at the options above and choose the bank and account that best suits your circumstances. You might be interested in…The below posts might also be of interest to you:Transfer money from New Zealand to AustraliaAustralian mortgageAustralian Tax – what you need to knowStill got questions? If you’ve read the above content and the answer to your question isn’t there, please write a comment below and I’ll research the answer for you.Can I help you find something else?If you need advice on moving to Australia from New Zealand, I’ve created a helpful little questionnaire to point you in the right direction. We have owned our properties in Nz for 17+ years so this is not something we can provide ? What is the alternative to have instead ? Reply JJ Smith 20 May 2022 - 10:46 am Hi Tirena, Thank you for your comment and sorry for the delay in replying. This is a common problem I get asked about. The importance of good references from prior landlords, real estate agents and property managers is to prove you’ll be a reliable tenant, that you’ll pay your rent on time and that you’ll treat the property as if it were your own. As an alternative you can get references from former neighbours, co-workers or employers. Good luck with your move. Reply Vickki Salkeld 4 May 2022 - 5:29 am What do they mean by “tax residency details” when verifying yourself in person at the bank. I have already opened an account and need to visit the branch on arrival. Thanks Vickki Reply JJ Smith 4 May 2022 - 6:14 am Hi Vickki, Thank you for your comment. You need proof of your IRD number for tax residency in NZ, TFN number if you have/had one (if you’ve previously lived in Australia). You need your passport for ID and proof of visa. Thanks for alerting me to the lack of advice for the process and requirements. I will make this clearer in the post. Please feel free to email me back any further questions you have. Good luck with your move. Reply Sky 27 March 2022 - 6:28 am Hello. I’ve just set up with Commonwealth Bank and have received my welcome letter to take into my selected branch. My question is how do I find out my tax residency details outside of Australia. Is this NZs IRD number or no? Sorry if this is a silly question, I don’t know much about this stuff so would really appreciate your help thanks. Reply JJ Smith 27 March 2022 - 10:32 pm Hi Sky, Thanks for your comment. Not a silly question. As New Zealanders we generally become the equivalent of Australia citizen’s for tax purposes. This way we pay the same tax as locals. There is the option to being a temporary resident for tax purposes, but this is only useful if you are getting your income from NZ and have investments you don’t want to have to pay capital gains tax on. Once you have arrived in Australia you apply for a TFN, which is the same as your IRD number in NZ. The easiest way to do this is through TaxBack. Once you have received your TFN you can supply it to CommBank. Find out how to get a TFN here: https://www.movingtoaustralia.co.nz/australian-tax-what-you-need-to-know/. You only need to present your passport for identification and verification in a Commonwealth Bank branch to get your account setup and working. Please feel free to email me back any further questions you have. Good luck with your move. Reply Charlee 15 February 2022 - 11:30 am Hi there, I was just wondering what the best thing is to do with KiwiSaver. Did you have this transferred to Au or have you left your NZ bank account open? Also will I need proof of closing my NZ bank account to open an Australian one? Reply JJ Smith 16 February 2022 - 8:44 pm Hi Charlee, Thank you for your comment. Personally I recommend you leave your Kiwisaver in NZ until you are 100% you will not return. It won’t make any difference until you need it in your retirement. Contact your KiwiSaver provider if you decide to transfer your KiwiSaver funds. They can take you through the process. Most people I know leave their bank account open in NZ for when they visit. You are able to open an Australia bank account without closing your NZ one. Definitely try to open your Australian bank account two weeks before you go using the above link. It make it a lot easier when you arrive in Australia. Please feel free to email me back any further questions you have. Good luck with your move. Reply Ren Wildman 17 March 2022 - 6:38 am Hi, We have recently moved from NZ to northern Queensland. Yes, you are able to open a bank account in Australia, however you are not able to withdraw your money. You are able to use your account fully when you have a property sales agreement or rental agreement. Reply JJ Smith 24 March 2022 - 8:30 pm Hi Ren, Thanks for your email. Did you apply for a Commonwealth account using my referral link before you left? Because I don’t believe you need a rental agreement or similar to activate your account. Only your passport. I was aware that if you waited until you arrived in Australia and went directly into a bank that you would need paperwork that we simply don’t have when we first move over. I look forward to your reply. Reply JJ Smith 24 March 2022 - 8:33 pm Hi Ren, I have confirmed with CommBank customer service that if you apply for a Commonwealth bank account using my referral link a rental Agreement or similar is not required for account activation. You only need to present your passport for identification and verification in a branch. Once identification and verification is complete, your account is activated on the same day. If you are still waiting to get your bank account functioning, you are able to setup an account with CommBank asap using my referral link and you will have access to your funds as soon as you can get into a branch with your passport: https://www.commbank.com.au/MAP127. Then you can get Medicare sorted too. Have a great day. Heather 1 July 2021 - 7:31 am Hi JJ, I’m in NZ & just completed creating an account with Comm Bank only to see once confirmed that I can’t transfer any money in to it until I’m physically in Australia. This pretty much defeats the purpose of setting it up. I’m confused as your advice suggests you were able to deposit money via OFX etc before arrival. Have I missed something? Reply JJ Smith 4 July 2021 - 10:54 pm Hi Heather, Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately the process has changed because the ATO requires all financial intuitions, including Commonwealth Bank, to capture tax residency information for customers before they open an account. However, this does not takeaway from the benefits of opening a bank account before you are in Australia, as once you get there bank’s require a lot more paperwork, e.g. proof of address, which you will not have. Sorry I have not updated the content yet to reflect the above, which I will do today. I have emailed my contacts at OFX and XE to see if they can recommend how to get money ready for deposit and use asap after you have been validated in branch. I will let you know what they say. Thanks Reply JJ Smith 6 July 2021 - 1:19 am Hi Heather, I’ve heard back from both foreign exchange partners, XE and OFX, and they confirmed my theory. It takes 1-5 days to transfer funds from NZ to Australia through your bank. So you need to register for accounts with both Commonwealth and either XE or OFX and once you have visited CommBank in Australia you can request a transfer through XE or OFX and depending on time of day it will take 0-3 days to arrive in your new account and ready to use. Here is Simon at XE’s reply: ‘Yes, this is a common issue that many of our clients who are relocating to Australia come across. The easiest thing for clients to do is set up an account with Xe prior to relocating. As you know this only takes a couple of minutes. They can then transfer their NZD into AUD and we can hold it in our high security trust account until they arrive in Australia and go to the bank and finalise the account. The other option is to set up the Xe account, go to Australia and finalise the bank account and then lock in a rate and transfer the money. We can hold the AUD in our account for as long as the client wants. Once their account in Australia is set up we can transfer the funds as quick as the same day.’ Hope the above has helped. Reply Heather 7 July 2021 - 10:30 pm Hi JJ, Thanks for investigating this further. And thanks for your site, it definitely helps ease the transition with more information available. I’ll be continuing to read and reread your content in my preparation. It takes a huge lot of uncertainty from the situation. All the best Reply Tony 26 June 2021 - 10:44 pm Hello JJ, We are moving to Brisbane from New Zealand in the next couple of months. I opened an account with commonwealth bank last week, but we have to provide tax resident details once we reach Australia. Was it from New zaeland or should we have to take one from Australia? Cheers Many thanks Reply JJ Smith 5 July 2021 - 1:33 am Hi Tony, Thanks for your comment. The tax resident details they are referring to are outlined here: https://www.commbank.com.au/about-us/opportunity-initiatives/opportunity-from-good-business-practice/sustainable-business-practices/fatca.html. The number you choice to use is dependent on whether you want to be a Resident or NON-Resident for tax purposes in Australia. If you choose NZ, then it is your IRD number. If you want to be a tax resident of Australia, then you will advise this and provide CommBank with your TFN when you receive it. More info on TFN’s: https://www.movingtoaustralia.co.nz/australian-tax-what-you-need-to-know/. I’m researching this at the moment, but from what I have discovered so far, the main reason your would want to be a NON-Resident in Australia (for tax purposes) is if your income comes greatly from NZ, e.g. wages or from rental properties. Here’s a post that might help you: https://www.hrblock.com.au/tax-academy/tax-laws-residents-non-residents. Please feel free to email me back any further questions you have. Good luck with your move. Reply Nadia 17 June 2021 - 5:28 am Hi JJ, Your site has helped With a lot of organisation in preparation for my move to Australia. I am here now and opened an account with CommBank before I left NZ. It seems like they now ship your card to your home address, I am unsure whether this is due to COVID-19. Since I put an NZ address, it was sent there. Thought I would comment just in case somebody else comes across this. Reply JJ Smith 21 June 2021 - 1:56 am Hi Nadia, Thank you for your comment. Have you spoken to someone from CommBank so that you can arrange getting a card in Australia? I’ve emailed in my contact at CommBank Ankur, so that he can make sure you get sorted. Thanks for sharing as I do need to know if they have changed their process and haven’t been advised anything from them. Reply Nadia 21 June 2021 - 1:57 am Thanks for your response. Managed to get stuff sorted a day or two after this comment. It does seem as though process hasn’t changed too much, if at all. Turns out I was given the wrong information and the card was sent to my desired branch! It’s sorted now. Reply Betty 30 May 2021 - 5:24 am Will I be able to open a bank account even if I’m not moving till at least next year? Or am I best to wait closer to time? Thank you advance for whatever advice you’re able to give Reply JJ Smith 30 May 2021 - 10:24 pm Hi Betty, Thank you for your comment. It is best that you wait closer to when you are moving, unless there is a reason you need an Australian bank account. Two weeks before you move is the optimal time to open an an Australian bank account. However, make sure you do open it before you leave, as you need a lot more paperwork if you wait to open it while in Australia, e.g. proof of address and three months bank statements. Please feel free to email me back any further questions you have. Good luck with your move. Reply Sandra Wilson 8 April 2021 - 12:14 am I have recently closed my commonwealth bank account as I have come one way to nz Unfortunately things are not working out and I will be returning ASAP Can I reopen this account? I still have the card and BSB number – account number?? Alternatively can I open a new account from nz? How do I manage to get a new visa card? Last time I arrived into Australia I had a lot of issues getting a card as they said it can only be posted to you. That makes it extremely difficult for me as I will have to land in Brisbane and drive back to WA as I will be flying from NZ. If I have to open a new account in Brisbane can they issue me with a visa card in the branch as well as a travel money card or can I be issued with one here in NZ before I leave. Many thanks Sandra Wilson Reply JJ Smith 8 April 2021 - 6:40 pm Hi Sandra, Thank you for your comment. I have CC’d my contact at Commonwealth so he can help you. I’m not 100% sure whether you need to open a new account or if they can re-activate your old account. I am sure he will be able to arrange for you to collect a new eftpos card from a CommBank in Brisbane before your drive. The problem you had when you arrived is exactly what I went through, hence setting up this partnership where you need a lot less paperwork to setup an account and can collect an eftpos card as soon as you arrive. Please feel free to email me back any further questions you have. Good luck with your move back to Australia. Sorry it didn’t work out in NZ. Reply Luke Kim 1 April 2021 - 2:44 am Hi JJ, I just opened a bank account online with commonwralth bank. And I realise that I need to bring passport and supply tax residency details. I don’t know how to provide my tax residency details. Thanks. Reply JJ Smith 1 April 2021 - 2:59 am Hi Luke, Thank you for your comment. I’ve just spoken to CommBank and they are referring to a tax file number (TFN) or IRD number. You do not need a TFN to open an Australian bank account. If you don’t have a TFN yet I recommend you get TaxBack.com to apply on your behalf. Here’s the process (https://www.movingtoaustralia.co.nz/australian-tax-what-you-need-to-know/): – Register your details on this short online form – https://www.taxback.com.au/en/tfn-application-np/?utm_ref=movingtoaustralia – Send a copy of valid ID/Passport to Australia@taxback.com – A Taxback.com representative will get in touch to let you know your application has been completed and submitted to the Australian Tax office. By law you must be present in Australia when applying for a TFN. Taxback.com will secure and send you the TFN Advice Letter once issued by the ATO. If you do have a letter from the IRD stating your IRD number take that with you to your nominated CommBank branch with your passport. BTW Commonwealth Bank have an amazing customer service team, so if you have any other questions you can call them and get the answers straight away. It’s one of the main reasons I love recommending them. Call 13 2221 – 6am to 10pm (+61 2 9999 3283 from overseas). Please feel free to email me back any further questions you have. I mistakenly picked the wrong branch and will be going into Adelaide first for a week before settling in Queensland. Surely they can do the identity process in any branch, any experience with this? Cheers Linden Reply JJ Smith 24 February 2020 - 1:29 am Hi Linden, Thanks for your comment. I will email my contact at CommBank and see if there is anything he can do. They maybe able to forward the doc’s to a Queensland branch instead. I will let you know when I hear back from them and if you can select a brunch that would help the process: https://www.commbank.com.au/digital/locate-us/. Thanks Reply CommBank Team 24 February 2020 - 1:32 am Hi, Thank you for your email. Please let Linden know any CBA Branch can be visited in Australia for identification. Preference is the chosen Branch but sometimes it may not be possible. Regards CommBank Team Reply JJ Smith 24 February 2020 - 1:34 am Hi Linden, Hope you’ve seen the above reply from CommBank. You are able to visit any branch for identification. There customer service is fantastic and if you have any questions in the future I recommend you give them a call or email: https://www.commbank.com.au/moving-to-australia/international-banking-team.html?pid=47272&q=&sc_psk=143163&sc_crkey=353628772533&c. Have a lovely afternoon. Thanks Reply Penny 30 September 2019 - 8:16 am Kia Ora I am moving to Brisbane permanently August 2020. I intend to open a Commonwealth Account two weeks before arriving. I will still need to send money back to my Westpac Account in NZ, what is the best, cheapest, easiest way to do that? Or would it be more beneficial to open an AU Westpac Account when I arrive? Reply JJ Smith 9 October 2019 - 12:24 am Hi Penny, Thank you for your comment. I highly recommend you use XE for your money transfer. You can use any combination of banks and they give you a more competitive rate without the fees the banks charge. Read this post: https://www.movingtoaustralia.co.nz/foreign-exchange-money-transfer/. Please feel free to email me back any further questions you have. Good luck with your move. Reply Vivian 31 July 2019 - 2:33 am Hi, how do I keep paying my debt(not student loan) that I have with ASB after I move to Australia? Thanks! Reply JJ Smith 12 August 2019 - 1:53 am Hi Vivian, Thank you for your comment. Sorry for the delay in replying. You will be able to transfer money into your ASB account from Australia. From there you will be able to transfer it where ever you need. I do recommend you setup an account with XE or OFX, which will save you transfer fees and get you the best foreign exchange rate. Read this post which explains money transfer: https://www.movingtoaustralia.co.nz/foreign-exchange-money-transfer/. Please feel free to email me back any further questions you have. Good luck with your move. Reply Misty 17 March 2019 - 11:27 pm Hi, I just send you guys a message but I have another question:) I currently bank with westpac here and I’ve just opened up an Australian westpac account. Would it be okay to start putting money in that account? Sort of as a savings account, so that when we do move over our money will be in that bank account, and I can close my New Zealand one. Thanks! Reply JJ Smith 17 March 2019 - 11:29 pm Hi Misty, That’s great that you have already setup a bank account. Sorry but I don’t know exactly how Westpac accounts work. I know you are able to transfer funds into a Commonwealth account as soon as it is setup and I don’t see why this would be any different. I do recommend you transfer money using XE or OFX rather than your bank. You will save the $10-$25 fee on each transfer and get a better rate: https://www.movingtoaustralia.co.nz/foreign-exchange-money-transfer/. It is simple to setup an account and schedule transfers. Good luck with your move. Reply Jodie 19 December 2018 - 9:15 pm Hi, are we still able to open an account with commonwealth if we are unemployed? I am moving to Brisbane and will be seeking full time employment once I arrive. Reply JJ Smith 19 December 2018 - 10:57 pm Hi Jodie, Thank you for your comment. Yes you are able to open a Commonwealth Bank account while unemployed and looking for work. The only condition is that you deposit AU$50 within 6 weeks of opening the account. Please feel free to email me back any further questions you have. Good luck with your move.
