Victoria is known for its high-quality ECE system. The Victorian state government has invested significantly in the Best Start, Best Life reforms, expanding kindergarten programs across the state and creating more career pathways and opportunities for ECE professionals.
The strong commitment to early childhood education in Victoria makes it a promising destination for ECE professionals.
To provide a real-world perspective, we spoke with Ken Ah Honi, an early childhood teacher (head teacher) who moved from New Zealand to Victoria. Here’s his story:
I have always loved working with children. My aunt, who completed her degree in early childhood education in New Zealand, inspired me. Coming from a large family, I naturally took on caregiving roles for my younger siblings and nieces and nephews. This experience solidified my decision to study ECE.
Seeing the growth and development of children is incredibly rewarding. I’ve worked with babies, toddlers, and older children, and watching them learn new things and progress through different stages is very fulfilling.
I wanted to move because the cost of living in New Zealand was high, and I heard that salaries for ECE teachers were better in Australia. A friend and I saw the Victorian government’s financial incentive program on social media, and we decided to apply together. I received an Early Childhood Teacher Incentive to help my move and had support from a Victorian-funded recruitment agency, which made the process very smooth.
Professionally, I’ve taken on more responsibility here, which has helped me grow as a leader. In New Zealand, I was mainly a teacher with limited leadership roles, but in Victoria, I’ve had the opportunity to step into leadership positions and mentor other teachers. Personally, the move has reignited my passion for teaching and provided a better quality of life.
Moving to Victoria to pursue a career in ECE can be a highly rewarding decision. The state government’s commitment to quality education, combined with competitive salaries and professional growth opportunities, makes it an attractive destination for ECE teachers from interstate or overseas.
There is financial support of between $9,000 and $50,000 available, plus relocation support of up to $8,000 to help support your move.
Search and apply for a position that suits you, or connect with a partnered recruitment agency through Victoria’s Early Childhood Jobs website.

February 3, 2026 at 1:49 pmHi Chathu,
Thank you for your comment and sorry for the delay in replying. I have been on holiday with my family.
To find out more about teaching in Australia, I recommend you start by visiting the Victoria government website, teaching kindergarten in Victoria, Australia: A guide for international teachers. This is the only initiative of its kind in Australia that I’m aware of, and they have recruitment companies ready to assist you.
If you scroll down that page, you will see ‘find an early childhood job in Victoria’. The link below that takes to the Early Childhood Jobs website that connects early childhood education professionals with employers seeking to fill vacancies across Victoria.
Please feel free to email me back any further questions you have.
Good luck! How exciting for you and your family.
