Each major city has its own public transport system, and knowing how it works can save you a lot of stress and money. This guide covers the major cities, what you need to know about tickets and travel cards, airport connections, and links to resources for other destinations. Melbourne – Myki Melbourne’s public transport network includes trains, trams, and buses. You’ll need a Myki card to travel. How it works: Load money onto your Myki card and touch on and off at train stations, tram stops, and buses. Cost: Fares vary depending on zones; daily and weekly caps apply. Airport connection: The SkyBus provides express service from Melbourne Airport to the city centre. Myki cards are not valid on SkyBus, so plan to buy a separate ticket. Where to get a Myki card: At train stations, selected retailers, or online. Helpful links: Public Transport Victoria – Myki PTV Journey Planner SkyBus Melbourne Airport Sydney – Opal Card Sydney’s network covers trains, buses, ferries, and light rail. The Opal card is your key to travelling. How it works: Tap on and off with your Opal card on all public transport. Cost: Fares depend on distance, with daily and weekly caps. Airport connection: Sydney Airport is served by train and bus. The airport train goes directly to Central Station in about 13 minutes; Opal cards are accepted. Where to get an Opal card: Online, at train stations, or at retailers. Helpful links: Opal Travel – Transport NSW Transport NSW Journey Planner Sydney Airport Transport Brisbane – Go Card Brisbane’s network includes trains, buses, and ferries. The Go Card is the prepaid travel card for all public transport in South East Queensland. How it works: Tap on and off on all services to be charged automatically. Cost: Fares vary by zones; daily and weekly caps apply. Airport connection: Brisbane Airport is connected via the Airtrain service to the city centre. Go Cards can be used on Airtrain. Where to get a Go Card: Online, at train stations, or at retailers. Helpful links: TransLink – Go Card Journey Planner – TransLink Brisbane Airport Airtrain Other Major Australian Cities Perth – SmartRider: Train and bus services connect Perth Airport to the city via the Airport Line. Adelaide – MetroCARD: Buses serve Adelaide Airport; no train link. Canberra – MyWay: Bus services connect the airport to the city centre. Hobart / Launceston – Greencard: Bus services connect the airport to the city. Each of these cities has slightly different systems, so it’s worth checking before you move. Tips for Kiwis New to Australia Top up your card online before you travel, especially if arriving late or on weekends. Check zone maps—fares are often zone-based. Apps are your friend—use official journey planners for real-time schedules and disruptions. Consider monthly passes if you plan to commute regularly—they often save money. Keep a reusable payment card handy for buses or ferries if you travel outside major cities.
